Consumer spending fueled in part by the increased availability of consumer credit—on automobiles, radios, household appliances, and leisure time activities like spectator sports and movie going paced a generally prosperous 1920’s. Since then, advertising has grown massively from print, radio, and television. In 1966, a University of California study revealed that fewer than 2 percent of television commercials included black actors. But by the end of the decade, things were beginning to change, and beer makers eager to tap the total market were among the first to feature minorities in commercials. As early as 1965, Rheingold Beer, for example, was airing TV spots featuring African American, Puerto Rican, and Asian actors. The venerable Miss Rheingold contestsan annual institution in New York since 1939had been discontinued the previous year, due largely to the realization that a single Miss Rheingold could not accurately reflect the brewerys racially diverse customer base (Miller, 2002). In the Philippines, when Spain lost the Spanish-American War in 1898, Americans dominated the country and influenced in today’s modern day Filipina women. They started working and is already acknowledged in the society. Modern-day Philippine women play a decisive role in Filipino families. They handle the money, act as religious mentors, and could also arrange the marriages of sons and daughters, striving to improve the family’s dynastic connections. Beer, love it, hate it, is one of the most popular adult beverages the world over. (History of Beer) However, with the advent of television in the Philippines, the most common complaint is the dominance of sex and violence that is being portayed. This study will seek to analyze the images portrayed by women on selected liquor advertisements on television in 2013 here in the Philippines. Objectives of the Study It is common for young women nowadays to feel like they always have to belong in a certain group of people. Colt 45 Theoretical and Conceptual Framework According to Klapper (1960) in his Magic Bullet or Hypodermic Needle Theory, the mass media has a powerful influence on the mass audience and could deliberately alter or control people’s behavior. It states that, â€Å"mass media ord inarily does not serve as necessary and efficient cause of audience effect, but rather function through a nexus of mediating factors and influence. These mediating factors render mass communication as a contributory agent in the process of reinforcing the existing condition. † On the other hand, George Gerbner, in his Cultivation Theory determines the influence of television on viewer’s ideas of the environment they lived in. He found that dominance of TV created a common view of the world and that it homogenized different cultures. Cultivation research looks at the mass media as a socializing agent and investigates whether TV viewers come to believe the television version of reality the more they watch it. This theory states that, â€Å"Television shapes concepts of social reality†. The effects of mass media have an immense impact to the perception of its audiences. It will leave a mark that could influence one’s act as soon as it will be shown to the general public. The visual content of the selected liquor advertisement on television can easily be adopted as it considered being a cool model because it can be comprehend passively unlike the print and audio media as it requires much effort to understand what is being conveyed. These theories will explain how mass media through advertisements will influence the viewers in terms of its visual content. As an individual sees the product being advertised, it will instantly visualize the women because of the presentation which is attention grabbing. With the analysis of the images portrayed by women on the selected liquor advertisements, it will show the factors which has a great influence and factors that can easily be adapted by the audience. On the San Miguel Light and Tanduay Dark, the portrayal of the characters in every advertisement will directly influence the kind of clothes they wear, the accessories that they are using, the way the endorsers move their body, and inching closer to the man that can be seen throughout the advertisement. There are several values that the women are projecting and may have both a positive and negative meaning. Definition of Terms In order to provide better understanding of the study, the following terms were conceptually and operationally defined. Endorser. As used in the study, endorser refers to the person/s that promotes, supports, and approves the product. Advertising. Visual presentation is defined as what is being seen in the selected liquor advertisements namely San Miguel Light, Tanduay Black, GSM Blue and Colt 45, the actors, color, props or materials used are considered as the main factors. Significance of the Study The study will be beneficial to the following: Women. Issues regarding rights, freedom and treatment to women were discussed in this study thus; the findings can be helpful in awakening women’s consciousness on its real standing in the society. Feminist Group. This study will be beneficial to the feminists group. Feminists considered as opinion leaders, could get some more ideologies in order to widen knowledge about societal issues and how to treat those problems. Family members. This study will be beneficial to the family members. This study may provide parents or family members with invaluable information in guiding their children especially women and in purchasing goods and to be vigilant with the kind of TV advertisements that they are watching. Producers. This study will be beneficial to producers of advertisements. When the given samples of TV advertisement will be analyzed, it will show them the different factors in visual presentation that affects the response of the audience of what is more appealing. This will also inform them with the current status of the advertising trends and it may be a basis for change and improvement. Also, this study will help in the selection for producers before investing their money in the company that they will be working in the future. Advertising Industry. This study will help the advertising industry in understanding the importance of the advertisement that will be watch. The effects that may lead to deteriorating the moral values of one’s self because of what is projected next to them. Television Channels. This will help the television channel to analyze the content of the advertisements. This study will help the audience in determining the factors affecting the outputs or the produced advertisement. The researcher and the audience itself will be aware of what kind of TV advertisements they are watching which may affect their perception towards women most importantly. Media Practitioners. The findings of this study can be beneficial to media practitioner as it can be used in strengthening their expertise in the field of mass media since media play a vital role in the society and can greatly influence its audiences on this generation. Mass Communication Students. The result of this study will give awareness among the mass communication students who will be in the future and would be working on advertising industry. It will avoid repetition of negative effect or feedbacks by their outputs. Future Researchers. The result of this study can be used in the future researchers under the field of mass communication through the information that can be added on the next researcher study. The data gathered in this study can be utilized to support its research in line with this topic. Scope and Limitations The study will analyze the images portrayed by women as endorser of selected liquor advertisements on television in the Philippines based on setting, language, and body movement. This study will be determined from the given examples of Television Advertisements in the Philippines in particular, San Miguel Light, Tanduay Black, GSM Blue and Colt 45. Langston Huges Langston Hughes Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His father was James Nathaniel and his mother was Carrie Mercer Langston Hughes. His grandfather was Charles Langston, an Ohio abolitionist. As a young boy he lived in Buffalo, New York, Cleveland, Ohio, Lawrence, Kansas, Mexico City, Topeka, Kansas, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Kansas City, Kansas. In 1914 his parents divorced and he, his mother, and his stepfather moved to Lincoln, Illinois. In high school back in Cleveland, he was elected class poet, and editor of the senior class yearbook. He taught English to some families in Mexico in 1921 and also published his first prose piece, Mexican Games(Davis). In an excerpt from an article about Langston Hughes in Encarta 97, it says that he was discovered in 1925, while he was working as a busboy in a restaurant in Washington, D.C., when he accidentally left three of his poems next to the plate of Vachel Lindsay, an American poet. She helped him ge! t publicity for his works and she got him seriously started in writing(Encarta). In an article about Langston Hughes in The Reference Library of Black America it talks about all the places in the world that Hughes has traveled. He probably used much of the information of the cultures of other countries to write. Hughes traveled all over the world as a seaman. He went to the Soviet Union, Haiti, Japan, Spain, Genoa, France, and other parts of Europe. Hughes was an author, anthologist, librettist, songwriter, columnist, translator, founder of theaters, and a poetical innovator in jazz technology. Hughes liked to write in many genres such as prose, comedy, drama, fiction, biographies, autobiographies, and TV and radio scripts. Langston Hughes was the father of the Harlem Renaissance and made many contributions on the behalf of African- Americans which led to the end of discrimination and segregation(Davis). Hughes was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance because he was one of t he most talented and famous black writers in his time. The Harlem Renaissance was the black movement during the 1920's. Many African-Americans got famous during this time and more people in the United States and the world got to see another side of African- Americans which had never been seen before. People saw that blacks could do things the same or better than white people and many, but certainly not all, barriers like segregation were decreased noticeably. He wrote numerous protest poems in which he used irony to get his points across to the reader. Hughes was influenced by Jean Toomer, another black writer and poet. It seemed as though Hughes used his poetry as a way to combat against the ongoing struggle that African- Americans still face today. Many believe that his best poems were inspired by the city of Harlem. He was even called the Poet-Laureate of Harlem because of his unders! tanding for the city. Hughes best volume of Harlem works is Montage of a Dream Deferred. Hughes was the author who during the Harlem Renaissance used much of the Black culture in his work. He began to use the Blues, Ballad form, dance rhythms, folk speech, and Jazz in his poetry. Hughes had success in many different fields of writing. His best drama, Mulatto, a play, was performed on Broadway 373 times in 1935. In his best comedy, Little Ham(1935), again he uses themes from Harlem. Hughes's best fiction is in his Simple series. In his lifetime, Langston Hughes won several awards. In 1925 he won his first prize for poetry in the Opportunity contest and third prize for essay in the Crisis contest. In 1926 he published his first volume of poems, The Weary Blues. In 1953 he won the Anisfeld-Wolfe Award. Hughes also won the Witter Bynner Prize for undergraduate poetry while attending Lincoln University. Even West Indian poets, such as Leopold Senghor, saw Hughes as the father of the Negritude Movement(Davis). A Guide to the IB Middle Years Program The International Baccalaureate ® Diploma Programme is growing in popularity at high schools around the world, but did you know that this curriculum is designed only for students in grades eleven and twelve? It’s true, but it doesn’t mean that younger students have to miss out on the IB curriculum experience. While the Diploma Programme is only for juniors and seniors, the IB also offers programs for younger students. The History of The International Baccalaureate ® Middle Years Programme The International Baccalaureate first introduced the Middle Years Programme in 1994 and has since been adopted by more than 1,300 schools around the world in more than 100 countries. It was originally designed to meet the growing needs of the students in the middle level, which roughly equates to students ages 11-16, at international schools. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, sometimes referred to as MYP, can be adopted by schools of any kind, including both private schools and public schools. The Ages Levels for the Middle Years Program The IB MYP is targeted to students ages 11 through 16, which in the United States, typically refers to students in grades six through ten. There is often a misconception that the Middle Years Programme is only for middle school students, but it in fact offers courses for students in grades nine and ten. Should a high school only offer grades nine and ten, the school may apply for approval to teach only the portions of the curriculum that relate to their appropriate grade levels, and as such, the MYP curriculum is often adopted by high schools that embrace the Diploma Programme, even if the lower grade levels are not offered. In fact, due to the similar nature of MYP and the Diploma Programme, the IB’s Middle Years Programme (MYP) is sometimes  referred to as Pre-IB. Benefits of The Middle Years Programme Course of Study The courses offered in the Middle Years Programme are considered to be preparatory for the highest level of IB study, the diploma program. However, the diploma is not required. For many students, the MYP offers an improved classroom experience, even if the diploma isn’t the end goal. Similar to the diploma program, the Middle Years Programme focuses on providing students with a real-world learning experience, connecting their studies to the world around them. For many students, this form of learning is an engaging way to connect with materials. In general, the Middle Years Programme is considered more of a framework for teaching rather than a strict curriculum. Schools have the ability to design their own programs within set parameters, encouraging teachers to embrace best practices in teaching and cutting edge technology in order to create a program that best fits with the mission and vision of the school. A holistic program, MYP focuses on the student’s entire experience while providing rigorous studies that are implemented through varied learnings strategies. The Approach to Learning and Teaching for the Middle Years Programme Designed as a five-year curriculum for approved schools, the MYP’s goal is to challenge students intellectually and prepare them to be critical thinkers and global citizens. Per the IBO website, â€Å"The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community.† The program was designed to promote the fundamental concepts of â€Å"intercultural understanding, communication, and holistic learning.† Since the IB Middle Years Programme is offered globally, the curriculum is available in various languages. However, what is offered in each language may vary. A unique aspect of the Middle Years Programme is that the framework can be used in part or in whole, meaning schools and students can elect to engage in a few classes or the entire certificate program, the latter of which carries specific requirements and achievements that must be attained. The Middle Years Programme Curriculum Most students learn best when they can apply their studies to the world around them. The MYP places a high value on this type of immersive learning and promotes a learning environment that embraces real-world applications in all of its studies. To do so, the MYP focuses on eight core subject areas. According to IBO.org, these eight core areas provide, â€Å"a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.† These subject areas include: Language acquisitionLanguage and literatureIndividuals and societiesSciencesMathematicsArtsPhysical and health educationDesign This curriculum typically equates to at least 50 hours of instruction in all of the subjects each year. In addition to taking the required core courses, students also participate in an annual interdisciplinary unit that combines work from two different subject areas, and they also participate in a long-term project. The interdisciplinary unit is designed to help students understand how different areas of study integrate in order to provide a greater understanding of the work at hand. This combination of two different areas of learning helps students make connections between their work and begin to recognize similar concepts and related material. It provides an opportunity for students to delve deeper into their studies and find greater meaning behind what they are learning and the importance of the material in the greater world. The long-term project is a chance for students to delve into topics of study about which they are passionate. This level of personal investment in learning usually means students are more excited and engaged in the tasks at hand. The project also asks students to maintain a personal journal throughout the year to document the project and to meet with teachers, which provides ample opportunity for reflection and self-assessment. In order to qualify for the Middle Years Programme certificate, students much achieve a minimum score on the project. The Flexibility of the Middle Years Program A unique aspect of the IB MYP is that it offers a flexible program. What this means is that unlike other curriculums, IB MYP teachers are not constrained by set text books, topics or assessments, and are able to use the framework of the program and apply its principles to the materials of choice. This allows for what many consider to be a greater level of creativity and the ability to implement learning best practices of any kind, from cutting edge technology to current events and teaching trends. In addition, the Middle Years Program doesn’t have to be taught in its full format. It is possible for a school to apply to be approved to offer only a portion of the IB. For some schools, this means only offering the program in a few of the grades that typically participate in the Middle Years Programme (such as, a high school offering the MYP only to freshmen and sophomores) or a school can request permission to only teach some of the eight typical subject areas. It is not uncommon for a school to request to teach six of the eight core subjects in the final two years of the program. However, with flexibility comes limitations. Similar to the Diploma Programme, students are only eligible to receive recognition (the diploma for higher levels and a certificate for the Middle Years) if they complete the full curriculum and achieve the required standards of performance. Schools wishing their students to be eligible for these forms of recognition must register to participate in what the IB calls the eAssessment, which uses students’ ePortfolios of coursework to evaluate their level of achievement, and also requires students to complete on-screen exams as a secondary measure of aptitude and achievement. A Comparable International Program The IB Middle Years Programme is often compared to the Cambridge IGCSE, which is another popular international education curriculum. The IGCSE was developed more than 25 years ago and is also adopted by schools worldwide. However, there are some key differences in the programs and how students from each assess their preparation for the IB Diploma Programme. The IGCSE is designed for students ages fourteen to sixteen, so doesn’t span as many grades as the Middle Years Programme, and unlike MYP, the IGCSE offers set curriculum in each subject area. Assessments for each program differ, and depending on a student’s learning style, may excel in either program. Students in the IGCSE often still excel in the Diploma Programme but may find it more challenging to adapt to the varied methods for assessment. However, Cambridge offers its own advanced curriculum options for students, so switching curriculum programs isn’t necessary. Students wishing to participate in the IB Diploma Programme typically benefit from participating in the MYP instead of other middle-level programs.
